Thank you for indulging me as this week's blog takes the form of a Creative Meditation as a tender goodbye to my husbands' beloved mom. Until next week, stay safe and be well.

Notes to Myself

8/12/2023

This summer, I have learned a few things:

  • Be kind - always!
  • Be true to your essential, authentic self!
  • Be curious and open to whatever serendipity (the universe) drops in your lap. And be willing explore all the options.
  • Creativity can get you a long way toward solutions.
  • I am grateful for the helpers - the people who really care, who go above and beyond to make the world a better place.
  • Stubbornness serves you to a certain point - it keeps you going long past the stage you would have otherwise quit. However, there often comes a time when bullheadedness is no longer helpful and can be, in fact, detrimental. Finding the sweet spot is the key.
  • You never know when it will be the last time you do something that was second nature, part of your daily routine, and that you took for granted.
  • Wear the shorts/swimsuit/tank top/etc. Don't let others body-shaming judgment influence your personal style or comfort. Life can be uncomfortable enough - no need to sacrifice it for the prejudice of the small minded.
  •  At some point, we will all need assistance - leave your embarrassment and shame behind.
  • No matter how many ways you try to communicate something - as clearly as possible - some people will never hear or understand you. And that is OK.
  • Begin and end each day with gratitude.

Showing Up

8/6/2023

Showing up for yourself and others is at the very center of what it means to be human. But yet, it is often the hardest thing to do.

Whether you come from a background that didn't teach it as a core value or are neurodivergent and experience executive dysfunction, your inability to manifest showing up is often the consequence.

I don't want to suggest that not showing up is acceptable or inevitable - simply because it is hard.

Industry, determination, authenticity, creativity, acts of kindness, and dedication to your community and your personal tribe are all traits that you can learn and, in the end, be most proud of.

But how do we teach the skill of showing up?

  • My go-to for teaching almost everything is modeling. Literally, show what "showing up" looks like - name it.
  • Normalize vulnerability, authenticity, gratitude, engagement, and creativity.
  • Ask what they notice about the folks they admire and make a list.
  • Let people know that you expect them to "show up," do the work, and take responsibility.
  • And then trust that they will - and thank them.
