Deep Root Center was recently granted funds to purchase a Kubi. This innovative device will allow students to join classes remotely at Deep Root Center through video conferencing technology.
The Deep Root Center (DRC) Distance Learning Program is for students who want to leave school and take charge of their education, however are not able to travel to the DRC facilities in Canton. This program can be as flexible as the student requires (see membership levels).
The DRC Distance Learning Membership includes the following services:
Development of homeschooling documentation (IHIP and Quarterly Reports) as well as an Individual Independent Learning Plan
Access to the DRC on-line portfolio
Weekly advisory and mentoring meeting with Core staff member
Beginning, Middle, and End of the year family meetings with Deep Root Center Staff
Invitations to all trips and special workshops (as possible given the distance)
Support to find volunteer opportunities, internships, and jobs outside of Deep Root Center
Support to find classes outside of Deep Root Center
Access to Deep Root Center staff, classes (one on one and group), and socializing via video conferencing during our daily hours of operation, four (4) days each week – number of classes and social opportunities depend on the membership level chosen
*DRC's 35 week academic year is broken into two semesters (9/6/16 – 1/12/17 and 1/17/17 –5/25/17 excluding holidays)
How it works:
Each distance learning student will develop an individualized learning plan (along with their IHIP), which represents their interests, with a core staff person via video conferencing.
The student will then choose the classes during each ten week scheduling block that they would like to participate in at Deep Root Center, based on their level of membership. The staff will also help the student access resources for their independent work.
The staff will also set up a DRC portfolio account for the student which will provide direct access to resources
The student will indicate if/and when they would like to meet socially with some of the other students at designated times during the week via video conferencing.
The student will join classes and socialize via video conferencing each week as their membership level specifies
The student will meet with their staff mentor each week via video conferencing to discuss progress, seek advice and resources.
The student and mentor will meet via video conferencing every ten weeks to write the quarterly reports.
